Happy Independence Day, Sierra Leone (Mama Salone)!
“Patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotions but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.” – Adlai Stevenson
We have come a long way. We mark yet another Independence Day! We celebrate 55 years of history. We celebrate 55 years of freedom. We celebrate 55 years of culture. We reminisce on the past and appreciate how far we have come as a country in spite of the obstacles we have faced.
We should always stand tall and proud as Sierra Leoneans. We should stand tall, in spite of our shortcomings and trials. We should remain determined to attain our goals. We should always possess an unwavering hope for a better tomorrow.
However, as we celebrate another independence day, I find it incumbent for you to take time out to ponder on just how YOU will contribute to the development of Sierra Leone. I ask you the following questions:
Should we have surpassed where we currently are as a country?
What positive change can you make for your country?
How sincere and dedicated are you to be the change you want to see in your country?
I believe the change I want to see starts with me. I believe the change you want to see starts with you. I believe the change we want to see starts with us. So how do you be the change you want to see?
By Loving Mama Salone
Loving your country is like loving that one special person in your life, whether they be a family member, friend or spouse. You know that out of this world love you have for that person? That love that makes you do everything in your power to please that person, nurture that person and help that person grow? That love that motivates you to become better and productive for that person?
That love that makes you become SELFLESS for that person? You give, give and give your all to that person? You do not seek recognition for what you do. You do not seek reward for what you do. Uh huh, you all know the kind of love I am talking about!
Well, just give a portion of that undiluted love to your country! When you truly love your country you seek the best interest of your country, NOT YOUR BEST INTEREST. You do not engage in activities or behavior that would tarnish the image of your country. You just love your country with all your heart, not expecting anything in return. You just feel great satisfaction in having the opportunity to be of servitude to your country. Why? Because in loving Mama Salone, you become the change you want to see in it.
By Respecting Your Elected Heads
You may not like what your heads do in their personal lives and offices. You may not feel they represent the country positively. You may not feel they handle the affairs of state well. But guess what? You have to respect them. Why? They are your ELECTED heads.
Disrespecting your elected heads is tantamount to desecrating the green, white and blue. It is tantamount to chaos and violence. It is tantamount to disrespecting yourself because your nationality is part of your identity! And what good will come out of disrespecting your heads? Absolutely nothing!
So respect your elected heads but always hold them accountable for their actions. But while holding them accountable, recognize the difference between exercising your freedom of speech and abusing your freedom of speech. Always find positive ways to hold your elected heads accountable. And never compromise. Fight for what is just and right. Why? Because in your quest for justice, you become the change you want to see in Mama Salone.
By Having The Belief That Sierra Leone Will One Day Rise Up Like A Skyscraper
Positively contribute in your own little way to the development of Sierra Leone. Do not just seat back hoping and waiting for a change. Actually do something about it. No matter how bleak things may look for Mama Salone, hold on to the hope that things will change.
And what should you do while you hope for change? Work hard! Sincerely work hard! With dedication and love for your country, work hard! Work hard in your academics. Work hard in your office. Work hard in building your family in the right direction. Work hard to improve your behavior. Work hard to improve your character. Why? Because in making yourself better in positive ways, you are becoming the change you want to see in Mama Salone.
And one fine day, things will get better. Maybe you might not be fortunate enough to see the change. But first the change must start with you. Why should it start with you? For the sake of your children. For the sake of generations on born. For the sake of Mama Salone!

Happy Independence Day, Mama Salone!
